A scenic border hike between Albania and North Macedonia: once the gentle crests of the Deshat Mountains are climbed again, a boundless panorama opens up.

A strenuous start is rewarded with pure hiking pleasure: From the picturesque mountain village of Rabdisht, the ridge of the Deshat mountains has to be climbed again. The start of this day's stage is quite strenuous, because 1,000 steeply rising meters of altitude have to be overcome. Mercifully, the good path winds its way uphill through shady mountain forests before it meets up with the main trail again at the tree line and from then on leads across flowering and humming mountain meadows to the ridge top. Here again a breathtaking panorama opens up over the Peshkopi region in Albania and the untouched forest wilderness of the Marovo National Park in North Macedonia. The rest of the hike is a pure pleasure, following the gentle border ridge and then descending across wide alpine pastures back to the Albanian side. With the alpine village of Stanet e Hinoskes and its fortress-like stone houses as a worthy destination for the day.

Safety information

Attention: The stage is currently not well marked in some places, which in combination with difficult to see sections of the trail and little detailed maps can lead to serious orientation problems in some places. Currently we strongly recommend to hike the trail only with a local guide. If you still want to hike on your own, great experience with GPS devices or the use of map apps (incl. possibility of offline storage of maps; app recommended by Outdooractive) is necessary!

Turn-by-turn directions

The beginning of this stage is quite demanding, because the hike leads you directly from the mountain village Rabdisht up to the ridge of the Deshat mountains. The well visible path leads first from Rabdisht through a beautiful rural landscape along the striking shell limestone massif and then after about an hour it splits and leads through beautiful shady beech forests some steep steps at about 1700m to a fork. Here you turn south and soon rejoin the main route of the High Scardus Trail. The further trail leads approximately at the height of the timberline over nice ground and later steadily ascending to a steep grassy flank. Here the very well laid out trail leads up the grassy flank crossing and finally flattening out to a wide saddle. This mountain saddle (1910m) is located directly on the border between Albania and North Macedonia. It offers a magnificent panoramic view, especially of the untouched mountain landscape of the Marovo National Park on the Macedonian side of the mountain. It takes about 3 hours to get here from Rabdisht. Impressive is also the view back to the main ridge of the mountains Plocha and Mali Korabit, which reaches to the steep Kol below the Grama Peak. You have crossed this col the day before. The further way leads you now good-naturedly along the Macedonian side of the ridge, reaching after about half an hour over beautiful alpine pastures the next wide pass (2030m). Here our route branches off again from the main High Scardus Trail. You cross the border to Albania again and hike downhill over wide alpine pastures past some shepherd's huts and flocks of sheep with very attentive Sharri dogs. The descent is over the easiest hiking terrain, about 350 meters in altitude and leads again to the forest border to the hut village Stane E Hinoskes. Your destination in the hut village of Stane E Hinoskes is the only hostel, an ensemble of four massive stone huts with a very hospitable host couple.

By road

At the main square of Peshkopi, turn north into the road "Rruga Rasim Fetahu Bardulla", which will take you to the thermal baths of Peshkopi. The road becomes a gravel road after that - you continue to follow it upwards through the valley. At a fork in the road, choose the straight road that will take you to Rabdisht (the road on the left at the fork leads to Zagrad). Park at the beginning of the village and follow the logical path into the village on foot.
