Long and persistently spectacular: this day's stage is without a doubt one of the highlights of the High Scardus Trail. Even the start of the hike, from the sheep pastures of Grama up into a spectacular mountain basin, is impressive. From here on, the trail artfully winds its way over the main ridge of the Korab Mountains with many a change of direction, always looking for the best possible hike, to reveal a breathtaking panorama at the top of the stage (2,330m). The steep descent below the Grama Peak requires a little caution and best dry conditions, while the rest of the stage, now already in the gentler terrain of the Deshat Mountains, is a hiker's dream. During the final descent (in total 1,300 meters of altitude) to the impressive stone mountain village of Rabdisht, your thighs will be challenged once again. But one of the most enchanting accommodations along the entire High Scardus Trail awaits you at the day's destination.

Safety information

Attention: The stage is currently not well marked in some places, which in combination with difficult to see sections of the trail and little detailed maps can lead to serious orientation problems in some places. Currently we strongly recommend to hike the trail only with a local guide. If you still want to hike on your own, great experience with GPS devices or the use of map apps (incl. possibility of offline storage of maps; Outdooractive app recommended) is necessary!

Note: There is one clear exit during this stage. After the steep descent from the Grama Peak col, the High Scardus Trail is heading east at an altitude of 2.000m, following a prominent terrace. In case of an emergency, the exit offers a much shorter variant: follow another path, which proceeds descending from Grama Peak col and leads directly down to the village of Cerjan.

Turn-by-turn directions

There are two different possibilities to start this stage, depending where you stay overnight: First possibility: You start at the huts on the plateau of Grama near the reservoir. From here, you follow the High Scardus Trail on the plateau. First without any ascent, after one hour the path start to gain altitude in a gentle way. Finally you will enter an impressive mountain basin, where the path from the Korabi Mounatin Camping site is joining in. The second possibility is to start from Korabi Mountain Camping. From here, you hike further up the valley, following the right course of the stream. Finally, the clearly visible path leads quite steeply up to a prominent edge of the terrain, where an impressive view of a mountain basin opens up to you. Here the main trail from the Grama plateau is joinig in, as mentioned above. From now on, the path is quite flat again and finally turns west into the large cirque. Immediately at the end of the valley the path leads you to the right (Northwest) and again more steeply uphill to cross a total of three small mountain passes in a very attractive route. Fascinating views open up here again and again, especially of the Korab Mountains, whereby the path finally leads relatively flat onto a high plateau. Shortly before the actual mountain ridge you pass one of the rows of bunkers on the Albanian - Macedonian border at 2330m - a testimony to the history of the Cold War. On the ridge, a breathtaking low view opens up, especially on the mountain villages of Albania. From the top of the ridge, a good path leads you to a very steep terrain at the foot of Grama Peak. This path makes it possible to climb the steep terrain and leads in a seemingly endless zigzag down the steep grassy slope. At the foot of the steep slope, where the terrain flattens out a bit, there is a prominent turnoff to the left while the zigzag path continues down into the valley to the village Cerjan. However, you follow the branching off path, which leads in a very beautiful terrain alternately in alpine soils and crossing steeper flanks to a striking saddle called „Shkrtec“ (2.015m). Shortly before this saddle, the trail turns again to the southeast and descends sharply over several terrain steps until the turnoff from the main trail to the mountain village of Zagrad. Here the trail descends more steeply and soon enters a shady beech forest. The trail now descends steeply for about 800 meters, alternating between beech forests and farmland. After reaching the idyllic mountain village of Zagrad, you continue to follow the path, which now leads in the compass direction Southwest and crosses a striking terrain ridge, which consists of white shell limestone, on a very beautiful cart track. Soon there is a magnificent view of the mountain village of Rabdisht, which lies amidst fertile fields. In the center of the tightly built stone village is then the destination of the stage, the guesthouse Sabriu.

By road

The starting point Grama is not accessible by car. The best way to reach it is via the High Scardus Trail Stage 11 from Radomirë.
